Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

John 12:3

Mary worshiped Jesus with what was precious to her and it affected all those around her. They could tell that Jesus changed her.

How can you worship Jesus through how you live? Carve out some time today to spend with Jesus, letting Him know what He means to you, as Mary did.

game on

Read John 11:45-12:11

I was a 4-year-old kid when I heard my father ask my mother in a heated argument, “Who will you choose? Your God or me?” I will forever be proud of my mother’s wise choice. She chose God. She committed her life to Him, knowing that He would be faithful to her. Was it easy for her to continue on as a single mom of 3 kids? No, but the Lord was, is, and will continue to be faithful to those who trust in Him. God glorified Himself in her life, in my sibling’s lives, and in mine. He knew exactly what He was doing!

As you prayerfully meditate on today’s Scripture, observe the actions of the religious leaders, Judas, Mary, Lazarus, and Jesus Himself.  Who or what were they committed to?

Where do you see yourself in the picture? Who do you identify with?  Where do your commitments lie?

your move

Let’s look to what God wants to say directly to you today through  John 11:45-12:11.

Scripture: Write down the verse or phrase that jumped out to you most. What about it stuck with you?

Observation: What would you say are the mixed motivations of the Pharisees as they plot to kill Jesus? What do you suppose was Mary’s motivation?

Application: What is something you own that is of utmost value to you? What would it look like to honor Jesus with it? How could you worship Jesus with that which is so precious, like this woman did?

Prayer: Take a few moments to imagine yourself sitting on the ground next to the woman at Jesus’ feet. Watch her worship and watch Jesus’ reaction to her. Rest in His gaze.

bonus round

What must it have been like to sacrifice so much, like Mary did, for Jesus? What would it mean for you to sacrifice so much for Jesus? To fully commit and surrender to Him? Ponder these ideas as you listen to the music and consider the lyrics of this song (below).
